CROM CASTLEThere has been a castle at Crom for the past 400 years but the present house, designed by Edward Blore, who was responsible for sections of Buckingham Palace, was built in 1832, for the 3rd Earl of Erne and is set in an open park of great trees, shady garden walks, and a lakeside boat house.
In 1987, the National Trust acquired ownership of 1900 acres of parkland but the Earl of Erne kept the keys to the castle where, in the West Wing, weddings now take place and guests are accommodated.
The Castle, which is near Newtownbutler, was the setting for the television series, ‘Blandings’, which was based on the books of P G Wodehouse and starred Jennifer Saunders and Timothy Spall. The present Earl’s son, Viscount Crichton, who manages the commercial aspects of the castle, appeared in a cameo part as a butler.
